The Sentient Beings

Sarah Rice

Founder and Managing Director

Before founding Sentient in 2003, Sarah spent three years with global IT PR agency Text 100, working on key accounts such as KPMG Consulting, UUNET and Cisco. Prior to this, her work experience is eclectic, ranging from an eventful stint in the local film industry to being a creative writer in an industrial theatre company.
She has a passion for working with clients that give her the freedom to think both creatively and strategically, allowing her to breathe new life into traditional PR tactics.

Roger Hislop

Strategy and head of Sentient Digital

Roger started working with Sentient as a contractor from its earliest days, doing much of the writing and strategy development. His trajectory got closer and closer to Sentient until the inevitable happened… he joined the team full time, becoming a partner in 2009. Roger's experience as an account director at a leading tech PR company in Dubai running campaigns for IBM, Canon, Accenture, Cisco Systems, Inmarsat and others, coupled with his many years as a business and technology journalist, make him an excellent resource for Sentient.

This strong PR background, a certain level of innate geekiness and his original qualification as an electrical engineer meant that kick-starting a digital PR division at Sentient was just plain inevitable.

Elzaan Rhode

Account Director

Elzaan became a Sentient being in May 2006. She has nearly a decade of PR agency experience, having worked on a broad range of business-to-business and technology clients since her graduation from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 1997 with a PR Diploma. Some of these are Old Mutual PFA, Momentum Collective Benefits, EasyPay, Proudly South African, Independent Online and M-Web CommerceZone.

Elzaan was drawn to PR by its power to influence outcomes by changing perceptions. Her passion is science, and she grabs every opportunity to learn more about the world around her.

Lisa Clark

Regional Manager Johannesburg

Lisa has a BA in English, Drama and Psychology; following this qualification she completed an Honours in Psychology.  But her ambitions of being a psychologist were not meant to be. She was only nineteen when she graduated and it was hard to get anyone to take her seriously, so she found her way into the PR industry.
Lisa has extensive experience in the consumer PR, corporate PR and technology PR arenas, with a baptism of fire working on the Microsoft SA account for four years. She has a love for the digital world and technology, and her focus is on PR that has a clear purpose. Her plan is to steadily build a successful JHB operation for Sentient.
When not in the office Lisa is partner to Rautie, mum to two daughters, a dog, two cats and a hamster.  She has a thing for Bikram Yoga and used to scuba dive for fun.

Wendy Minnaar

Account Executive

Wendy is a born and raised Paarl girl, she finished her PR diploma at CPUT in 2008.  She practiced PR at a publishing house for her internship year working on titles such as Eat In, Eat Out, VISI, Edgars Club and Woolworths Taste amongst others, and although she loved the publishing industry, she decided to give the agency environment a go.

Wendy ended up in PR after studying a year of engineering and realizing she was more interested in people as opposed to numbers.  In a panic she de-registered from her Engineering course and registered for PR, and she hasn’t looked back. She loves the ever-evolving nature of PR and is extremely inquisitive, spending lots of time Googling all things she’s unsure about and interested in.  Wendy plays four musical instruments, including the drums and believes she is an undiscovered music maestro.

Cassie O'Neill

Account Executive

Born in Malawi, Cassie completed her schooling in Ireland and took a gap year after her final year of school and came to Cape Town on a weeks’ holiday.  That week turned into a four year Btech Public Relations degree at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.  She completed her internship as editor of the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s student newspaper, and has worked all sorts of different jobs ranging from au pair to assistant stylist.

Cassie is particularly interested in the CSI aspects of the Public Relations field and all things that relate to good corporate governance.  She is excited about working with Sentient Communications and all the new learning opportunities that lye ahead and absorbing as much knowledge as possible about the Public Relations industry.
